Significant engineering challenges

Quad 204 was a redevelopment of the Schiehallion and Loyal oil fields located in blocks 204 and 205 of the UK Continental Shelf, where water depths are between 300m and 550m.

The project, which was undertaken to extend the life of the fields to 2035 and beyond, posed one of the most significant engineering challenges that BP and its partners had ever encountered. These included the construction of the Glen Lyon, the world’s largest purpose-built floating production, storage and offload vessel (FPSO).

Valves supplied

We supplied a range of manual and actuated valves from ½” to 3” in super duplex stainless steel for use in vacuum pump skids.

Super duplex was chosen in preference to austenitic or ferritic steels for very specific reasons.

  • Its greater strength offered weight reductions leading to major transport and assembly cost savings together with reduced environmental impact.
  • Its overall corrosion resistance and in particular its ability to withstand the damaging effects of crevice corrosion made it ideal for harsh North Sea conditions.

Stringent standards

For the project we provided full documentation and traceability. All materials used were European-sourced and a full Qualification Test Record (QTR) was provided by the foundry. NORSOK Standards M630 and M 650 were met – standards that have been developed by the Norwegian petroleum industry based on its 40+ years of experience of operating on the European Continental Shelf.
